Corrective Exercises for Spinal Health

This week, we are checking in. How are your corrective exercises going?

As a crucial part of your chiropractic care, we recommend corrective exercises for you to do in between your visits. These exercises are essential for healthy spinal movement or spinal hygiene, similar to brushing your teeth. They play a vital role in supporting the work we do at the practice. Movement of your spine is an essential nutrient for your brain. About 90% of this movement nutrient is derived from your spinal vertebra’s receptors through your joint capsule’s mechanoreceptors, which are concentrated in the upper neck. When your spine moves, your brain makes connections and creates new cells and tissues based on the areas in motion.

Your active participation is not just important; it’s crucial in your healing process. You, as the patient, have the power to contribute significantly to the speed of your recovery. Your commitment and effort are key to your progress.

Patients who stay consistent and committed to their at-home exercises experience the following benefits:

  • reducing their Neuro-Structural shifts,
  • increasing their range of motion,
    faster recovery,
  • maintaining their body’s ability to hold adjustments longer,
  • decreasing future injuries,
  • increasing input to your mechanoreceptors
  • less frequency of symptoms (secondary conditions), including less (such as less back pain, neck pain, hip pain, shoulder pain, reducing headaches)

How often should you do your corrective exercises? We recommend doing them at least 2 times per day:

  • In the morning, right after you wake up
  • In the evening, before bed

If you’re aiming for even more progress, doing these exercises 5 times per day will certainly help you more. Consider it an A+ effort. The more you can reinforce positive motions and habits, the healthier your body will be and the less likely it is to get shifted and injured.
