Stay Ahead of the Cold & Flu

It’s that time of year again when our level of health begins to lower, and we start to succumb to the cold and flu viruses. But why? And what can we do to stay healthy?

To answer the question of why let’s examine our lifestyle habits from this time of year. Summer is over, the school season is in full swing, and the holiday season approaches. In order to juggle school, work, athletic, and social demands, we tend to sleep less, get outside and exercise less, and eat more sugar and fewer fruits and veggies. Anyone already started sampling Halloween candy? Plus, vitamins and nutrients essential to our health are harder to come by.

Over the next few weeks, we will be hi-lighting simple things you can do to stay healthy through this Cookie, or I mean Holiday Season.

To kick it off, we will begin with Vitamin D

Vitamin D

Through the fall and winter, the sun is lower in our atmosphere, and we can no longer synthesize Vitamin D from sun exposure, even if it is sunny out. You can read all about Vit D, and why it is essential here in the article we put out earlier this year.

Experts agree that adults need about 5,000 IU’s, and children need about 3,000 IU’s per day to maintain healthy levels.

We recommend Designs for Health Vitamin D+K for the highest quality Vitamin D supplement to stay healthy.

It couples vitamin D with vitamin K, specifically K2 as MK-7 since they work better synergistically for optimal bone and blood vessel health, and to maintain your immune system.  It is available in our online supplement store and here in the practice. Be sure to pick some up at your next visit.
