Sugar, Stress & Your Nervous System
At Platinum Chiropractic, we refer to this time of year as Cold & Cookie Season. From Halloween through Valentine’s Day, we’re surrounded by candy, cookies, pies, and holiday parties. The combination of colder weather, less sunlight, increased stress, and reduced sleep creates the perfect storm for fatigue, inflammation, colds, and flare-ups of health issues like neck pain, back pain, or headaches. It’s crucial to understand that these factors significantly impact our health, leading many people to feel run-down around this time, even in sunny San Jose, CA.
What’s really happening has less to do with germs and more to do with how sugar and stress affect your nervous system. The truth is, cold and flu viruses are circulating all year long. Whether or not you get sick depends on your body’s ability to adapt, and that ability is directly influenced by your stress levels, sleep, nutrition, and nervous system health. When your body is under chemical stress from too much sugar, physical stress from poor posture and inactivity, or emotional stress from holiday overload, it can lead to what we call Neuro-Structural Shifts. These shifts obstruct your nervous system’s ability to regulate your immune system, hormones, and healing.
Sugar is one of the biggest chemical stressors on the body, especially during the holidays. Whether it’s added sugar in treats or refined carbohydrates in foods like dairy, bread, pasta, cereal, rice, and alcohol, your body processes them all the same, as glucose (sugar). Without the fiber found in whole fruits and vegetables, these foods cause sharp insulin spikes that lead to fatigue, inflammation, decreased immunity and mood swings. Over time, this imbalance can contribute to
- hormonal changes,
- weakened immunity,
- weight gain,
- and chronic inflammation
- that worsens joint pain, stiffness, and spinal tension.
When your body is overloaded with sugar, you may notice symptoms like fatigue, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, cravings, or poor sleep. You may also find that your usual aches and pains, from neck stiffness to low back pain or sciatica, flare up more often. These are signs that your nervous system is struggling to adapt. Many patients at Platinum Chiropractic choose to increase their Neuro-Structural Chiropractic adjustments during this season to help their bodies handle the extra stress. Keeping the spine and nervous system aligned enables you to
- stay out of chronic “fight-or-flight” mode,
- supports better immune function,
- improves sleep, and
- keeps inflammation in check.
To help your body stay resilient this season, start with simple changes. During Cold & Cookie Season, your body doesn’t need perfection. It needs consistency.
- Choose whole foods over processed snacks. Eat oranges instead of orange juice, whole fruit instead of candy, and vegetables with protein and healthy fats instead of refined carbs.
- After big meals, take a short walk to help metabolize sugar and stabilize blood sugar.
- Add two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil to your breakfast, and or drink a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar diluted in water before or after high-sugar meals to blunt insulin spikes.
- Swap soda for sparkling water, white rice for riced cauliflower, and chips for baked plantain or sweet potato chips cooked in avocado or coconut oil.
- Focus on getting sunlight during the day and prioritizing sleep at night.
- Keep your nervous system functioning optimally through consistent Neuro-Structural chiropractic care. If you notice more colds, sinus issues, fatigue, or recurring back and neck pain this time of year, that’s your body signaling that it’s struggling to adapt and needs more support.
Even small changes like these can significantly reduce chemical stress and make a noticeable difference in how you feel. This emphasis on the power of small, manageable changes empowers you to take control of your health and well-being, even during the most challenging seasons.
