The Science Behind Referred Pain

Hilton’s Law & Spinal Alignment

Hilton’s Law is a principle in anatomy that describes the relationship between the innervation of joints and the surrounding tissues. It states that the nerves supplying a joint also innervate the muscles that move that joint and the skin overlying it. In simpler terms, the same nerve that provides sensation to a joint also tends to supply the muscles responsible for its movement, as well as the skin in the surrounding area.

For instance, if a joint is injured or has a problem, the pain may not be confined to that joint alone; it can spread to the surrounding areas. Understanding this principle is essential for recognizing referred pain and diagnosing issues related to joints. Symptoms (secondary conditions) can manifest in areas that are different from where the actual injury is located.

Hilton’s Law underscores the interconnectedness of joints, nerves, and surrounding tissues, which is crucial for doctors and practitioners when assessing and treating issues related to muscles, nerves, and joints.

A common example of Hilton’s Law can be seen in the neck. The cervical spine includes the joints and discs in that region. If an issue arises, such as a Neuro-Structural Shift causing a herniated disc, a person may experience pain not only in the neck but also in the shoulder, arms, or hands.

This phenomenon occurs because the nerves that supply the neck joints also connect to the skin and muscles in those areas. Therefore, when there is an issue in the neck, the pain can radiate to surrounding regions such as the upper back, head, and chest, illustrating how these nerves work together.

This is why, at Platinum Chiropractic, we don’t just focus on where the pain shows up. We look deeper. Hilton’s Law reminds us that the source of dysfunction is often different from the site of the symptom. That’s why our comprehensive examination includes 4-View Motion X-ray Studies, Nerve & Muscle Testing, and Orthopedic & Neurological Testing. These diagnostic tools enable us to see the whole picture of how your Neuro-Structure is functioning, allowing us to identify the actual underlying cause of your secondary conditions rather than simply chasing surface-level pain. When we correct the underlying cause in the Neuro-Structure, many secondary conditions (symptoms) heal and subside.
