What Is a Neuro-Structural Shift & How Do We Find One?

The primary condition behind your secondary conditions

You go in for a routine dental visit. Nothing hurts, nothing has changed, and you’re mostly there because the reminder card showed up. Then the dentist finds a cavity. You didn’t feel it, and you wouldn’t have felt it for a while, because a cavity doesn’t get your attention until it has reached the nerve. You leave glad someone looked before it got to that point. Your spine can carry a problem the same way, and at Platinum Chiropractic in San Jose, we call it a Neuro-Structural Shift.

Your spine is fundamentally different from a tooth: it is the central highway connecting your brain to every part of your body. Every organ, muscle, and tissue depends on the signals that travel through your spine and nervous system. Unlike a tooth, which affects a localized area, your spine is responsible for orchestrating your digestion, immune response, hormones, sleep, coordination, and much more. All without you ever noticing. A problem in this system can silently undermine your health for years before you feel a single symptom.

The Primary Condition

In our practice, we look for Neuro-Structural Shifts. By “neuro,” we mean your brain and spinal cord, your central nervous system. By “structural,” we mean the bones that house and protect the delicate system: your skull and your spine. When the spine drifts from its normal alignment and loses motion, the nerve communication traveling through it may become obstructed. That obstruction is the primary condition.

Put simply, a Neuro-Structural Shift is a measurable change in the structure of the spine that affects the nervous system it protects, disrupting the signals that travel through it. It has two components: the spinal alignment and movement, and the nerve communication traveling through the spine.

When a Neuro-Structural Shift goes uncorrected, altered spinal alignment and loss of segmental motion place uneven loading on the joints, discs, and supporting muscles. Over time, this leads to microtrauma, muscular imbalances, and gradual degenerative change. The nervous system housed inside that structure is affected alongside it, and the tissues and organs those nerves supply feel the effects.

What a Shift Can Cost You

The symptoms you eventually notice are what we call secondary conditions, because they’re secondary to the Neuro-Structural Shift. Which one appears, and where, depends on which nerves are obstructed.

  • A shift in the neck may show up as recurring headaches or migraines, neck pain, or numbness and tingling down an arm.
  • A shift in the low back may show up as sciatica, low back pain that returns after every long drive, or a disc problem that develops over years.

Because the same nerves supply your organs, the obstruction may extend beyond pain into recurring heartburn, sleep that doesn’t restore you, and an immune system that struggles with every cold going around.

Each of these is usually treated as its own problem, and each one recurs because the primary condition was never examined. The loss is bigger than the symptom. It is the years spent managing it, the activities you stop planning, and the hard-earned health you watch slip while the cause stays unaddressed. When the primary condition is corrected, those signals have a clear path again, and your body can get back to the healing it is built to do.

Dr. Karo learned this at age 18. As a college diver with a back injury, every doctor he saw addressed the pain, and the next step they offered was surgery. One chiropractor looked for the primary condition instead. That is why this practice looks first and adjusts second.

How Do You Know If You Have a Neuro-Structural Shift?

You can’t feel your way to the answer, for the same reason you can’t feel a cavity. The only way to know is a specific chiropractic examination of the spine and nervous system. Ours includes a range of testing, including Muscle & Nerve Testing, orthopedic and neurological testing, and all necessary X-rays, including 4-View Motion X-rays, which show how each segment of your spine moves. Then there is a second visit to go over all of your results, Dr. Karo’s recommendation of care to reach your health goals, and an opportunity for an adjustment.

Together, those findings show Dr. Karo Isajan where in your spine a Neuro-Structural Shift has occurred, how it is affecting your nervous system, and what needs to be corrected. People come to our San Jose office from Campbell, Willow Glen, and Los Gatos for that analysis, because knowing the primary condition is what makes a custom recommendation of care possible.

Anyone can have a shift. Stress in any of its three forms, physical, chemical, or emotional, can produce one, and most of us struggle with all three.

A Different Objective

Conventional chiropractic care is good at what it sets out to do: ease muscle spasm, temporarily improve range of motion, and reduce pain. What we do at Platinum is different in its objective. Our focus is Neuro-Structural Correction, finding the primary condition and correcting it, so secondary conditions have a chance to resolve at their source, and the rest of your body works better for it.

Someone in Your Life May Need This

Think about the people in your life with a health issue that hasn’t resolved. The one they’ve tested for, treated, and managed, without anyone examining the spine and nervous system underneath it. The one holding them back from fully showing up. There’s a chance the primary condition has never been looked at.

Just give them our number, and we would be happy to schedule a Complimentary Consultation to see if we can help. Or we can give them a call.

If you are the one who has been managing the same concern for years, there’s no need to wait it out. Schedule a Complimentary Consultation at our San Jose office, a conversation with Dr. Karo about your health goals and whether Neuro-Structural Corrective Chiropractic is a fit for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Neuro-Structural Shift?

A Neuro-Structural Shift is a measurable change in the structure of the spine that affects the nervous system it protects, disrupting the signals that travel through it. It has two components: the spinal alignment and movement, and the nerve communication traveling through the spine. At Platinum Chiropractic in San Jose, it is the primary condition Dr. Karo Isajan looks for.

Can you have a problem with your spine and not feel it?

Yes. Only about 10 to 15 percent of your nervous system is made up of sensory fibers, which relate to what we feel, so a Neuro-Structural Shift can build for years before it produces a symptom. Like a cavity, it usually gets your attention only after it has progressed. A chiropractic examination of the spine and nervous system is how you find out.

What is the difference between a primary condition and a secondary condition?

The primary condition is the Neuro-Structural Shift itself. Secondary conditions are the symptoms that follow from it, such as recurring headaches, neck pain, sciatica, or low back pain, and which one shows up depends on which nerves are obstructed. Managing a secondary condition without examining the primary condition is often why the same problem is recurring.

How does a chiropractor find a Neuro-Structural Shift?

Dr. Karo Isajan uses a range of testing, including Muscle & Nerve Testing, orthopedic and neurological testing, and all necessary X-rays, including 4-View Motion X-rays. A second visit covers all of your results and his recommendation of care. There’s no need to wait it out. Schedule a Complimentary Consultation at our San Jose office to get started.
